Alley Cat Allies

is an organization whose focus is on protecting feral and domestic cats from unnecessary death because of overpopulation in humane societies and shelters. We all know how prolific cats can be at breeding.

They also sponsor a program of trap/neuter/release for feral cats, which, like feral dogs, have lost their trust in humans and unless they are taken at an early age, cannot be returned to the domestic cat mind.

In this program, volunteers maintain feeding stations. It's worth a look. They bring up an interesting point for the bird lover - it is not the population of domestic or feral cats that kill so many of our birds, it's the constant destruction of habitat by building. I believe that's so from my own observations.
