The Palmetto Poison Center is warning people to watch their step and pay close attention while enjoying summer activities outside this summer.
According to a news release, experts warn that during the warm summer months snakes are on the move and will continue their travel through the fall as their mating season ends.
There are several venomous snakes in South Carolina including the canebrake rattlesnake, pigmy rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake, copperhead, cottonmouth, and coral snake. Snakes generally are not aggressive and bite for two main reasons: to obtain food and to defend against prey, the release said.
According to the release, the center receives over one hundred phone calls concerning snake bites every year. They provide treatment information to the public and hospitals throughout the state. While the majority of poisonous snake bites are not fatal, they can cause major complications.
If you are bitten by a snake here are some things the center says you need to know:
• Remain calm
• Wash the bite with soap and water
• Do not apply a tourniquet or ice
• Do not try to suck the venom from the bite site
• Call the Palmetto Poison Center and seek immediate medical attention
"Be careful when working out in the yard, especially in dense brush. Snakes blend in very well to their environment. Many people are often bitten while gardening," Dr. Jill Michels a Clinical Pharmacist and Director of the Palmetto Poison Center at USC's South Carolina College of Pharmacy said in release. " We recommend treating all snakes as poisonous and advise against picking them up."
The Palmetto Poison Center is staffed by trained nurses and pharmacists who can provide treatment information when a snake bite has occurred. Additionally, the Palmetto Poison Center provides poison prevention education around the state to inform parents and youngsters not only about the dangers of household poisonings, but also outdoor exposure to poisonous agents.
>From medication errors to insect bites, poisonous plants, pesticides and other household chemicals, the Palmetto Poison Center can provide expert advice.
The Center provides services to over 4 million residents in all 46 counties of South Carolina. Services are free, confidential and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
To contact the Palmetto Poison Center, call 1-800-222-1222.
And watch where you put your hands in the local garden center. There have been reports of snakebites in Wal-Mart and other garden centers. Watch for coral snakes IN and around the pots, nestled in the foliage, and in the soil of potted plants. They burrow.
Maybe his 15 minutes of seduction is over?

I spoke to my friend Sue in MO. Sue and Jim have a small hobby farm now, but were into it seriously until Jim decided to retire. Crops and livestock.
She was telling me how expensive feed is, and now, they can't even afford chicken manure compost from the factory farms.
We need to tell the government 'HANDS OFF' THE FAMILY FARM. AGRIBUSINESS IS NOT THE ANSWER FOR MORE REASONS THAN I HAVE ROOM, INCLUDING THE SAFETY OF "HOME GROWN" FOOD VS. BIG AGRA.

When you are calling Congressmen today, and you can get your Congressman’s name by going to http://www.redstate.com/action, keep in mind that these are the four Blue Dog Democrats who decided to cut a deal with the liberals in the House of Representatives.
These four men need to be called by every single freedom loving person in their districts.

But this action of Obama's is despicable - and dangerous, too. It's because of this character sitting in jail, participating in his jihad that we have to take off our shoes at the airport and have our belongings riffled through. And I don't like it.

My first question is "Why?" Are they (the government) expecting resistance? Are they going to use physical force to restrain you if you do not want it? Will they remove your children from your care if you refuse and send them to foster care for endangering their lives? Will they take the refusers to FEMA camps?
Will they go house-to-house? Beat your doors down? Remove you from your home and forcefully administer the vaccine?
Will they shoot you for refusing?
I do go on - but forgive me please. My mind is very creative at times.
I am fascinated by this. If you build one, send me photos and I'll post them here. You first!
This looks like a magic cottage to me - maybe the kids could use one as a playhouse.
The Blue Dog Democrats are meeting with the House this afternoon to be pressured into voting for this crap.
Wouldn't you rather have the scalpel in someone who got good grades rather than someone who's holding the scalpel just because of affirmative action?
I woke up to a recording of Fred Thompson and former Lt. Gov. of NY, Betsy McCaughey (I hope that's right) discussing Obamacare on Fred's show recently.
I will try to find the link and offer you this chilling episode in the world of Obamacare.
Call it what it is. Obamacare is the controlled murder (the Nazis called it extermination) of the elderly, and those with chronic or terminal illness.
I will be back with the audio or the link if I can find it. Stay tuned.

The most important part of this entry is the motto of "La Raza", with which she is the head, or perhaps now, heavily involved.
La Raza is a "civil rights organization" according to the Cox News Service story quoted above. But could you imagine Cox applying this same description to an Anglo-Saxon group with obvious racist motives? Let's say the group had a motto declaring: "For the Race, Everything; Outside the Race, Nothing." Well, that is the La Raza motto: "Por La Raza Todo, Fuera de La Raza Nada."
We are watching a RACIST BECOME A SUPREME COURT JUSTICE FOR A LIFETIME TERM.
Truly unbelievable. If there is smoke regarding the "Read the Bill Act", here is the gasoline to make it burst into flame.
Either Conyers is senile or he really means it and it's probably a bit of both.
No person in Congress should be allowed to continue in his or her elected position if this is the attitude. They are legislating blindly. They have broken their oaths.
They need to be removed. This is sedition.
By saying this, by implying this, Chris Matthews and his ilk are the dangers,
and so we must let the network know that we aren't and turn him off. Click.

Have you heard about Obama's "new" federal guidelines that prevent officers from arresting illegal aliens? When did this come about? Why has no one mentioned it? Is this Obama flying under the radar net of media reporting? Have you ever heard of anything so nonsensical or dangerous as making it illegal to arrest illegals? What will this do to our immigration problems as outsiders learn that is now legal to sneak into our country? I guess Obama is going to import his electorate for 2012 -- no rational, America-loving American is going to vote for the enemy in the White House. (hat tip Chuck)
Read the whole thing here:
PHOENIX – The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested 72 people during a three-day crime sweep in Chandler and Queen Creek southeast of Phoenix.
says the operation started as an attempt to control illegal immigration, but new federal guidelines prevent deputies from arresting illegal immigrants solely for being in the U.S. illegally.
The sheriff's office says it released three illegal immigrants from custody Thursday and seven Friday based on instruction from federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The first two days of the operation resulted in 68 arrests, including 14 illegal immigrants who committed a civil or criminal violation and the 10 who were released.
Of the 72 total people arrested, 25 were illegal immigrants.

This bill not only assaults our freedom of speech, and so many of our other protections under the Constitution, but it also prevents us from acting to protect ourselves in uncountable situations.
Please view these videos, read some of the articles, make your own decision, and hopefully you will
be prompted to call your Senators, especially those in the Senate Judiciary Committee for full hearings on this bill. The Democrats want to put this on the fast track, although it's already been
passed, but it still can be delayed with hearings. Please do the responsible thing and protest.

Dangers of fluoride to people and pets - please watch the video on the first entry from Fluroidealert.org
Nearly 20 years ago a group of us who supported the removal of fluoride from our community's drinking water (the county), went to a commission meeting to deliver pounds of research on this topic. We found that it was a lucrative deal; that fluoride would be delivered and added to the municipal water treatment plants for delivery into the drinking water and the county paid. They did not have to pay a cent to purchase it.
This by-product of aluminum processing is toxic. It is found in pesticides. If you were caught dumping it into a water source, you'd go to jail for life. Or more. It is toxic. But if your local government believe it's a good deal for them and protects from dental caries, or if they like kickbacks and grabbing some easy cash for the community, they'll continue to be proponents.
There are many who do not question and support this additive. That's a decision you must make, so read up on it, please watch that first video, and make your own decisions.
You can make safe toothepaste from peroxide and baking soda. You can even sweeten it with extracts. I believe I listed some recipes here in former entries.

ANTI-GUN SOTOMAYOR NOMINATION:

You and I know that it is extremely important that a Supreme Court justice understand and appreciate the origin and meaning of the Second Amendment, a constitutional guarantee permanently enshrined in the Bill of Rights. The record of Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, on the Second Amendment should causes cause every patriotic American grave concern over her treatment of this enumerated constitutional right.
Last year, the Supreme Court decided the landmark case District of Columbia v. Heller, holding that the Second Amendment guarantees to all law-abiding, responsible citizens the individual right to keep and bear arms, particularly for self-defense. Following Heller, the Supreme Court is almost certain to decide next year whether the Second Amendment applies to states and local governments, as it does to the federal government (see NRA v. Chicago and McDonald v. Chicago.)
While sitting as a federal judge on the Second Circuit Appeals Court, Judge Sotomayor revealed her views on the right to keep and bear arms in Maloney v. Cuomo, a case decided after Heller, yet holding that the Second Amendment is NOT a fundamental right, that it does NOT apply to the states, and that if an object is "designed primarily as a weapon" then that is a sufficient basis for total prohibition -- even within the home!
Earlier, in a 2004 case, United States v. Sanchez-Villar, Sotomayor and two colleagues perfunctorily dismissed a Second Amendment claim, holding that "the right to possess a gun is clearly not a fundamental right." Imagine if such a view were expressed about other fundamental rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, such as the First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments!
TELL THE SENATE TO REJECT THE
ANTI-GUN SOTOMAYOR NOMINATION:
SEND YOUR FAXES NOW!
Surprisingly, Heller was a 5-4 decision, with some justices arguing that the Second Amendment does not apply to private citizens or that if it does, even a total gun ban could be upheld if a "legitimate governmental interest" could be found. The dissenting justices also found D.C.'s absolute ban on handguns within the home to be a "reasonable" restriction. If this had been the majority view, then ANY gun ban could be upheld, and the Second Amendment would be meaningless!
The Second Amendment survives today by a single vote in the Supreme Court. Both its application to the states AND whether there will be a meaningfully strict standard of review remain to be decided by the High Court. Judge Sotomayor has already revealed her views on these issues -- and they are obviously contrary to the intent and purposes of the Second Amendment and Bill of Rights. As supporters of the Second Amendment who are deeply concerned about preserving all fundamental rights for current and future generations of Americans, we need to strongly oppose this nominee, and URGE the Senate NOT to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor -- NOW. Please, CLICK HERE NOW to send Blast Faxes to EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF THE U.S. SENATE, telling them to REJECT Sonia Sotomayor when the vote on her nomination comes up!

P.S. As tens of thousands of faxes are already pouring in to the Senate offices on Capitol Hill, the CCRKBA is already LOBBYING HARD to make sure that our Congressmen follow through on ALL of our demands to protect and support the Second Amendment. But lobbying costs money -- so we need YOUR help to keep pounding away on these legislators to do the right thing!
PLEASE MAKE YOUR BEST CONTRIBUTION NOW:
Like all other threats against our freedoms, we must rise and defeat this nomination -- slap it down hard.
To stop Obama's backdoor anti-gun nomination and hold him to his promise that he would not try to take away anyone's firearms, we need to let the U.S. Senate know with thousands of faxes telling them to leave guns alone.
But it's going to take Americans like you, who understand what our Founding Fathers envisioned for our nation -- and who are willing to fight to defend our Constitution and for what it stands.
So please, help the Citizens Committee and me defeat those who wish to gut and trash the United States Constitution.
Help us flood the U.S. Senate with a sea of FAXES big enough to drown each and every Senator willing to vote away the Second Amendment.
Please, send your Donation and FAXES TODAY!

I am shocked by the brutality of this, but not surprised. I tried to stop an injured elephant from performing at a local circus passing through here, years ago. I was unsuccessful. This is really inexcusable treatment, and I personally, will boycott Ringling - with the proud heritage - and any other that comes through here.
These animals should be retired immediately to sanctuaries scattered throughout the USA.
When one goes berserk, killing trainers and bystanders and destroying property, the animal shouldn't be killed - but the handlers and owners should be incarcerated. These people have pushed these magnificent animals to their end.

Seems to me that the term and the use of a "Czar" in the USA, especially in the POTUS' cabinet, is more dangerous to us than medicinal marijuana.
From posts the past, you know how I feel about the use of marijuana in medicine. The science is already there. But drug wars are profitable...we may even be in drug war in Afghanistan - that may be the underlying factor. And why?
This "Czar" of Obama's doesn't agree with his boss.
I'm tired of the government overturning good medicine and good sense. I hope you feel this way, too.
I couldn't take anymore after the fifth question.
It was empty rhetoric. The questions were contrived. There was no meat. No substance, just a glib, mulatto man in the suit of a president attempting to hypnotize us.
Ever notice the reporters never ask a simple question, like "What about this "die with dignity clause and why is it in there?"
Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending
By STEVEN A. HOLMES
Published: Thursday, September 30, 1999, NY Times
In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders.
The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets -- including the New York metropolitan region -- will encourage those banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.
Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.
In addition, banks, thrift institutions and mortgage companies have been pressing Fannie Mae to help them make more loans to so-called subprime borrowers. These borrowers whose incomes, credit ratings and savings are not good enough to qualify for conventional loans, can only get loans from finance companies that charge much higher interest rates -- anywhere from three to four percentage points higher than conventional loans.
''Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements,'' said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer. ''Yet there remain too many borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.''
Demographic information on these borrowers is sketchy. But at least one study indicates that 18 percent of the loans in the subprime market went to black borrowers, compared to 5 per cent of loans in the conventional loan market.
In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.
''From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,'' said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ''If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.''
Under Fannie Mae's pilot program, consumers who qualify can secure a mortgage with an interest rate one percentage point above that of a conventional, 30-year fixed rate mortgage of less than $240,000 -- a rate that currently averages about 7.76 per cent. If the borrower makes his or her monthly payments on time for two years, the one percentage point premium is dropped.
Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, does not lend money directly to consumers. Instead, it purchases loans that banks make on what is called the secondary market. By expanding the type of loans that it will buy, Fannie Mae is hoping to spur banks to make more loans to people with less-than-stellar credit ratings.
Fannie Mae officials stress that the new mortgages will be extended to all potential borrowers who can qualify for a mortgage. But they add that the move is intended in part to increase the number of minority and low income home owners who tend to have worse credit ratings than non-Hispanic whites.
Home ownership has, in fact, exploded among minorities during the economic boom of the 1990's. The number of mortgages extended to Hispanic applicants jumped by 87.2 per cent from 1993 to 1998, according to Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies. During that same period the number of African Americans who got mortgages to buy a home increased by 71.9 per cent and the number of Asian Americans by 46.3 per cent.
In contrast, the number of non-Hispanic whites who received loans for homes increased by 31.2 per cent.
Despite these gains, home ownership rates for minorities continue to lag behind non-Hispanic whites, in part because blacks and Hispanics in particular tend to have on average worse credit ratings.
In July, the Department of Housing and Urban Development proposed that by the year 2001, 50 percent of Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's portfolio be made up of loans to low and moderate-income borrowers. Last year, 44 percent of the loans Fannie Mae purchased were from these groups.
The change in policy also comes at the same time that HUD is investigating allegations of racial discrimination in the automated underwriting systems used by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to determine the credit-worthiness of credit applicants.
