THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER, BELLA, HAS PASSED AWAY
After six years of wanting another dog, after her Dixie died, if you are a regular reader, you know that my friend in Washington was delighted after adopting beautiful Bella who is our cover girl. That's Bella.
She was doing very well, but missing her former owner. In three days she was not eating - showing no signs but anorexia and we all thought she was pining. Four days later, after constant attention, a vet put her to sleep while my friend held her and loved her away.
The night before, my friend slept with Bella on the kitchen floor. She was so broken hearted.
But she did the right thing for this is what the vet reported: Bella was bleeding to death. The best diagnosis she offered was Hemangiosarcoma often found in Golden Retrievers Bella's age. http://www.caninecancer.com/Hemangiosarcoma.html
We both cried - she in Washington and me here in the south. We'd been speaking constantly, worrying about poor Bella.
Sometimes, I have found when dear Maggie had to be put down of liver failure in Oregon, that Bear came to live with us almost immediately, a product of divorce, left at the vet's office. He never could take her place; he was his own very quirky guy. When Blade contracted bone cancer suddenly, a large dog was needed to help dull the pain - his death so quick and unexpected. I visited the local animal control desirous of saving a life. And there was Jack; a tiny blond handful of puppy, and absolutely irresistible sitting on a laptop case. He was handed to me. "Take him home," someone said, and I did. But strangely, in a week, Maya needed a home. Her owner was off to law school. This was her third home. She'd been at animal control twice. Like Blade, she just needed the right fit and when she greeted me at the front door, I think I just snapped the leash to her collar. It was her eyes. She's getting gray now, but loves her life, fitting into what has been a continuum of blessings that has lasted for 50 years.
The other night Bobby told me she wants a Lab puppy (black and female, please), while she waits for her broken wrist to heal a little more. But if you know of a litter in the Seattle area, you just leave a comment here.
And love to Bella, wherever she is in her journey back to God.

AFRICAN GREY MAFIA THREATENS PERSISTENCE OF GREY PARROTS IN THE WILD

Love African Greys? I do, too. I have a naked lady who is older than dirt and so happy with her life now.
My right shoulder is all scratched up - and now she follows me around the house walking and calling me.
This is a very sad commentary on exploitation of all wild birds. Never buy a wild-caught bird. They never tame down. And if you buy a bird, remember, you must plan for their future. You will not outlive them in most cases and sadly, they go from owner to owner. They are all very destructive, noisy, messy and will eat furniture, moldings, and one of my birds ate through paneling...careful cage placement and things to chew are a must. But they also need YOU; most of all they need their person (actually, it may not be you). And without love and attention, they become mutilators and vicious. They are wonderful and so smart. Bird brains are big and complex.
Ashley usually gets shoulder time in the a.m. and we start up the computer and she watches Ruby the Swearing African Grey or Pierre on Youtube. She whistles and talks to them and tries to feed my ear.
You can see her naked shoulder. She mutilated herself - her chest is bare, her legs are bare except for a few small feathers, and so is the area of her belly and butt, but she does have a pretty red tail. The plucking results when they are left alone, and she was left alone for weeks at a time in her past life. So please, don't adopt a hookbill if your schedule takes you away from them. They are quite human. As I type this, she is on my shoulder making little holes in my blouse. That's ok - shirts from the thrift store do me just fine. I go through them quite often.
She has taken up a bad habit which is getting off her cage by sliding down the legs and walking around to find me. She is so old she doesn't fly. So apparently, she is fearless and no threat to dogs and cats, whereas Margaret is a valkyrie, and has everyone bamboozled. I have to wear a hat at breakfast. And destructive?

Dear Rescue Supporters and Friends
Please
consider making one last year-end donation for the animals impacted by
Hurricane Sandy because the need continues to be great and the animals
are counting on us. The result of the first appeal was a wonderful
response and the generosity was overwhelming and enabled us to do so
much for so many. As I said before, you are all heroes. I want to
thank all of you that gave and helped meet the dire needs of the animals
in NY.
The
greatest need right now is money. Money for Boarding, Money for Vet

The
sad truth of the matter is that the second appeal was not at all
effective, and very little was collected. We presume this is because
the media has, for the most part, dropped the story and people think
that the problems have been resolved. This is not the case! Many
animals continue to be in boarding and sick because of the effects of
the storm, and we have very quickly run out of resources. We now we find
ourselves scraping the bottom of the barrel, just when the animals need
us so much.
In
addition, I must get back to the business of running Commonwealth
Humane and trying to keep us on an even keel through the winter. Many
of the projects I was going to undertake at year end were postponed, at
least for a while; therefore this must be my last appeal for your
support.
Thanks
to you and people like you, we delivered over 50,000 pounds of
supplies, two large trucks full filled with urgently needed food and
supplies. With your help, we can provide an end of year boost that is
so desperately needed.
As
I previously explained, with your assistance, we helped not just one

All donations will be allocated “For the Animals in New York”, and they will get every cent.
We
will issue IRS donation letters to all donors and since we are a

These
tragedies happen more often than one would imagine. It seems we’re
inundated with calls weekly from people whose dogs were shot by law
enforcement personnel.
Officers appropriately resort to deadly force when they believe their
lives, or the lives of others, are in danger. But sometimes officials
draw their guns unnecessarily or too quickly. Regardless, it’s important
that all officials whose work brings them in
contact with the public, and therefore inevitably with animals also, be
trained to deal with animal situations effectively and humanely. We
often recommend agencies take advantage of the National Animal Control
Association’s training programs (http://www.nacanet.org)
for that reason.
If, after reviewing state law (http://www.animallaw.com) and local law (http://www.municode.com),
it is believed a government agency wrongfully injured or killed a
companion animal, the shooter could face prosecution and the animal’s
guardians may be able to sue. In fact, it is important for any
companion-animal guardian to be familiar with the laws that
afford their loved ones protection from every kind of abuse.
