In his book, "The Outermost House", Henry Beston wrote this beautiful paragraph - one which I treasure. I mention it in my own book, "Waltz on the Wild Side - An Animal Lover's Journal", which is now sadly, out-of-print.
No matter how much we learn about animals, their interaction with their own species and others, we will never begin to even scratch the surface. But we can respect and love them for the jewels that they are, so special and unique, and attempt to understand the niches in the chain of their lives and their importance to ours...
“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.”

I hope Tarra will be gifted with another dog companion who will bring this loving and intelligent animal happiness after grief.
