Tonight is Halloween -
The spooks and ghouls stay away from my neighborhood - we are too rural for that. Besides - you never know on these warm nights, unless you have a really good flashlight, if the snakes are out, too.
So here I sit - after dinner, with a few of the dogs - may download some photos. My grandchildren are being escorted through their neighborhood by their mother. Grandson is into Scooby Doo or Spiderman and granddaughter is a witch tonight.
Holly, my Australian Shepherd is in recovery and well on her way to being whole, if her femur on the hind leg stays in the socket. Her lacerations are healing but the one under her "arm" in what would correspond to our armpit, is healing from the inside finally. She is flushed twice daily. Penrose drain came out last week. I found her on the bed yesterday.
Holly is a blue merle, blue-eyed Australian Shepherd who was viciously attacked by my female German Shepherd three weeks ago. I don't know what sparked it, but I think it may have been something about the water hose. They both love it, and I had filled the waterer by the wellhouse. I left them alone - heck - I've kenneled them together, but when Holly didn't come in around 7 p.m. I looked for her under the tool shed. She didn't want to come out. But she managed, and could barely walk. Left leg rear was twisted grotesquely around her right rear just above her foot and the gashes on her front leg had stopped bleeding. When I discovered the gaping hole under her "arm" I could see into her body between ribs and skin. It was awful. I gave her something for pain and she was taken to the vet's first thing in the morning. The only ER vet we had was two hours away. She made it through the night (I slept next to her on the floor) and through the surgery. Holly is about 10.
Maya now wants to get her. And Holly is afraid. Separation is the best thing to do; Maya came as a rescue a year ago. She'd been to a few homes and the animal control shelter. I can't put her down. So there will have to be a muzzle on her at all times in the house when Holly is fully recovered.
She is also looking at the possibility of having more surgery. Ka-ching. The first was approximately $700. And while I am not arguing the price, although I don't think putting a leg back into the socket warrants that cost, I am very grateful to the doctor's skill, maybe he could've presented us with the alternative while she was out on the table. That is, removing the head of the femur and letting the ligaments and muscles take over. Had a cat hit by a car once, and he had to have that done. Never had a problem with his leg. So if it dislocates again, she will have to have that. Estimate to follow.
I'm just very happy to have her getting well. She isn't a kisser. But she kissed me the other day and again tonight. She is from working stock. She was also a rescue from a couple in Georgia who didn't realize the beautiful puppy needed a job, and thus she came to me in a prong collar and never went in a crate again.

I remember using DEET sparingly when we lived in the Florida Keys. I never liked putting something on my body that killed another living thing so I resorted to long sleeves and pants.
Some people I knew there just slathered themselves with it.
I wonder if there will be long term consequences of it?

Nancy Pelosi finally unveiled her massive 19+ pound, nearly
2,000-page government takeover of healthcare. And she is
already pushing for a floor vote as soon as next week but
no later than Veteran's Day, Nov 11.
This bill is longer than Leo Tolstoy's ponderous book "War
and Peace"! It is five times longer than the Old Testament!
In short, it's a monstrosity. And most of it is written
in "legalese"!
The last bill from Pelosi was 1,000 pages. They didn't think
anyone would read it, but we did, so now she added another
1,000 pages! My staff is pouring through the text and I will
have a report for you as soon as possible.
Here's what we already know: Pelosi's bill includes the
"public option," government-run, taxpayer-funded abortions
and alarming new taxes. No wonder they've been hiding it!
On Page 110, lines 17-22, there is explicit authorization of
a new government health insurance program that commits federal
funds to pay for abortions!
So much for President Obama staring directly into the
camera and promising no federal funding of abortion!
And what about his promised "conscience clause"
protection for doctors and nurses?
We also expect Harry Reid's version of ObamaCare to emerge from
behind closed doors any day now, with pressure for a vote as
soon as possible. That means we could be facing TWO major votes
on ObamaCare within the next week to ten days!

As you might expect from the Obama/Pelosi/Reid power axis,
Congress will now be RUSHED to approve bills that no staff
can be reasonably expected to digest in just a few days.
Lawmakers tell us it could take a week or more just to get
through the text, but Pelosi will be demanding passage by then!
When confronted with the bill's staggering length and complexity,
Democrats say Congress has already dealt with every part of the
bill! Well, maybe a FEW of them have - behind closed doors -
but nobody else has seen this radical manifesto! It is TWICE
as long as anything the committees spewed out!

Ocala voters gave Suzy Heinbockel a second place victory in the City Council election. Heinbockel was running for Ocala City Council, District 1. Her victory qualifies her for a run-off election on November 17th.
Heinbockel has been a long time supporter of the Liberty movement in Florida. "I don't believe that our resolution from this economic crisis is going to come from government," Heinbockel says. "It's government's role to get out of the way, to make it easy for people to start businesses, and clear the path to level the playing field so people can work and grow their businesses without interference."
Suzy Heinbockel was a leader during the Ron Paul Presidential Campaign and, along with her husband, John, helped to sponsor the Florida Liberty Summit. She was chosen as one of the first Regional Coordinators for Florida Campaign for Liberty, but resigned the position in order to run for Ocala City Council, District 1.
Heinbockel’s opponent is 72 year old Mike Finn, a Planning and Zoning Board member for 17 years and a city councilman for 16 years, who is trying to come back from retirement after having left office in 2001.
When asked about her chances on November 17th, Heinbockel said, “I came in second by only 163 votes, so this is a very winnable race. Because the turnout will be very low, we have to make sure our people get out and vote. We need more volunteers to help make phone calls. And we need more donations for absentee ballot mailing.”

These videos you see issued from PETA and other sources on the hideous practices of animal handling - from the skinning alive of fur animals in China, the horrible beating of dogs and cats for food in Korea so that the meat will be tender, the deplorable treatment of cattle and dairy cows, chickens and other food animals, horses in fear and pain to be slaughtered and sent abroad.
The list is endless. Apply it to puppy mills. Medical research laboratories.

A feel good video for animal lovers
I have been a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator, working for licensed rehabbers. My job was to raise squirrels, opossum and ravens in the desert. One of my fondest memories were taking two very young whitetail fawns whom I named Wind and Sky, siblings, and teach them to drink from a bottle. They were with me for two or three weeks.
When I took them to my rehabber, Betsy Knight, who runs the Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary in Altha, FL, she was very careful not to "befriend" them. They would be weaned there with a minimum of human contact and later transferred to Tyndall Air Force Base to live in the forest and become game in deer season; sent off with prayers for their safety. That's all you can do.
When I see this, although I know it is not good for the deer to associate so closely with humans, it is a beautiful sight to me, and I wish I could do the same thing, while providing safe haven to them in hunting season.
But that would be in a perfect world.
It's like the fish I feed across the street. I can't fish for "my" fish. I don't do any fishing anyway. But if I did, I couldn't do it there. A few summers back, I watched one large bream who had lost an eye. I watched that fish for a year before it disappeared.
When I visited Montana this year, I wanted to visit a feed store and drop off salt licks on the prairie. But I know what would happen. It's like feeding game at a station to bring the subject in close so that they can be killed.

Campus violence prevention, disappearances and gun control

My friend and I were talking tonight about children disappearing from their homes, or from walking home from school or the bus stop and being murdered. There is a case coming up for trial where a 13 year-old was raped (the killer says it was consensual) and killed by a man in his late 30s. The public defender said there was no evidence of torture (is not the murder or the "killing" of a child - of anyone - the final torture?), and was having a tough time finding a jury. It was ludicrous. My thoughts on murdered children? When someone confesses, turn them over to the family to deal with him. Taxpayers will be spared the burden of room and board and appeals.
I don't think we think a whole lot about that happening to our young student who is now adult and going off to college. But it's happening more often.
It isn't unreasonable to give them lessons in self-defense or a firearms course and a weapon before you send them off to college. I would rather do that than send them off with no defenses, no confidence or resources to fend off an attacker or a kidnapper.

Hello Patriots! Right now, in Washington DC, our elected officials are destroying the US Constitution on a daily basis and yet nothing is being done to stop them. Almost all recent legislation enacted by Congress is unconstitutional, flat and simple.
The US Constitution is a marvel, as it is a simple document that is not difficult to read or understand, yet contains the precise language that allowed the governing of our country for more than 200 years and enabled us to become the most prosperous free country in the world.
Why is it now that our elected officials have opted, without authority, to throw away the Constitution and make up their own rules for governing our country? Was there a recent Constitutional Convention that none of us are aware of? The sad and scary answer is that liberal elements in Congress, aligned with a liberal President, are purposefully destroying the Constitution and in doing so is endangering our freedom and liberty.
Where is the Constitutional authority for bank bailouts, auto company bailouts, mandated health insurance, cap & trade energy schemes? I have read the Constitution many, many times, yet have found no authority for any of these things.
When pushed up against the wall and asked this hard question, liberals in Congress promoting these agendas use the "general welfare clause" referred to in the preamble of the Constitution.
Anyone falling for this explanation is a victim of the "dumbing down" of America over the last few decades. The words in the preamble of the Constitution need to be re-visited occasionally, so here they are:
"We the People of these United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America".
Read the line "promote the general welfare", and then look at the definition of the word "promote". "Promote" is defined as "to contribute to the progress, development, or growth of; to further, or encourage". It does not mean to mandate or provide for. Our founding fathers knew the exact language they were using; look at the phrase in the preamble "provide for the common defence". They used the specific word "provide" because that was their intent- to provide for the common defence. "Provide means "to supply or furnish; set as a condition, or stipulate". That is why we have a federal military force, because the Constitution provides for it.
If our founding fathers had intended to "provide" for the general welfare, they would have used the precise language to make that provision. But they didn't- and no Constitutional amendment has either. The conclusion I come to is that Congress is acting outside of the Constitutional authority granted them when they enact such legislation. There is no other explanation. And by doing so they are endangering the security of another thing in the preamble, "the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity".
I don't want to ramble on, but in this current debate over government health care the simple answer seems to be that there is no Constitutional authority for it. We need to return our nation back to the Constitutional roots it was founded on, anything outside of that is detrimental to our country and it's future.

The pet business, and especially our little carnivores who share our homes, may be limited.

These are the folks that can't get the budget out by Oct. 1, Seriously!!!So, we’ve got a 30 day budget extension. Well, guess what, 30 days from now we will be in the same boat. I guess this makes it easy for the news ‘reporters’ as all they have to do is recycle the same headlines from this week and from 2 years ago. And these yo-yo’s will still be playing SOLITAIRE!!!
