Security
was tight at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn.
With anarchists expected at this year’s convention in Tampa, Fla.,
police will be on their guard there as well.
Law enforcement agencies are bracing for the possibility of violent protests at the 2012 national political conventions.
The
FBI and Department of Homeland security say they have "high confidence"
extremists are preparing to disrupt both the Republican National
Convention, which is slated to open in Tampa this Monday, and the
Democratic National Convention, which gets under way the following week
in Charlotte, according to a joint intelligence bulletin issued Tuesday
by the agencies.
"The
most serious threat to persons and property during the conventions
continues to emanate from anarchist extremists willing to use improvised
incendiary devices (IIDs) or improvised explosive devices (IEDs)," the
agencies wrote.
According
to the bulletin, "anarchist extremists may travel from states outside
of Florida and North Carolina to engage in criminal activity during the
conventions." ...
