Ken Salazar, Secretary of the Interior, is rapidly decimating our wild horse (and burros) herds from the face of our wild, western landscape.
In the vast home of these wild horse and burro herds, where they have lived wild for centuries, the push is not for their benefit, and not only for grazing rights (horses and burros don't really compete, not in that wilderness), but for oil! There is further information in this blog (use the search bar, please, and enter wild horses) for a tremendously interesting video in two parts (I think) about this issue. The BLM is incredibly tenacious and destructive to our heritage which includes and honors wild horses and burros.
These roundups are not done on horseback - the animals are herded by helicopters which causes fear, injury and death.
My first burro, Samantha's first owners plucked her up off the desert on a trip to Arizona and brought her home as a foal. That was long ago when the BLM was not so brutal in their roundups. And then we have the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971 which seems to have gone away under Salazar.
Although horses and burros are not slaughtered in this country for meat, they do get shipped to Canada and Mexico, and if you want to see the videos, you will find them at Youtube and other sights. It is viscerally violent and ugly.
I hope you will be interested enough to send your comments as Carol suggests.
