Who likes really dark pumpernickel bread?

When I was young and worked in NYC, a morning on-the-run breakfast would be black coffee and really dark pumpernickel rolls. They were sold in coffee shops and there was a breakfast buffet in the Top of the Sixes building where my friend and neighbor, Bobby, would stop often if we were early. The dough made beautiful rolls, which was what we both loved so much. Leave it to New York City.

I have searched for a proper recipe for this bread - and hopefully, I've found it.
