Senator LeMieux (R-FL) - Second Amendment a fundamental individual right

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) today made the following statement after attending the U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments of McDonald v. Chicago. The Supreme Court is weighing whether the Second Amendment protection against government infringement of an individual’s right to keep and bear arms should apply to state and local governments. The federal government is already restricted from such an infringement on personal liberties.
Senator LeMieux said:
Before our nation’s founding, the right to keep and bear arms was accepted as a fundamental individual right. The Framers of the Constitution were careful to assure that this right would not be infringed by expressly preserving it in the Second Amendment."
I attended today’s arguments in McDonald v. Chicago and came away hopeful the Court will continue to protect Americans’ Second Amendment right by striking down the Chicago ordinance. The Constitution is clear. The ‘right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.’”
