Hello again Maple People.
It's Sunday morning and I sit here at the keyboard waiting for the coffee to sink in and pondering ideas about my next story; what to do... tractors, seasons, trees...I "plug" in the ideas one word at a time like I built the woodpile yesterday, one block at a time, but the single words remain scattered, alas, random chunks of wood all over the ground. "Gosh this is hard work" I think, ready to don my gloves and go back to the woodpile. Out the window I see Betsy returning from her early morning jaunt with the dogs. Yesterday she was commenting on her schedule of late, "like a farmer" she said, in bed by eight and up at five. She said something else interesting: "I'm raising those dogs like I wish I'd brought up the boys...light, loose, happy." I suddenly had my subject..."the dogs", our current children.
Parents always think theirs are the best kids in the world. Dog owners think the same way about their dogs; we're no exception on both counts. Our boys, Robby and Tommy, remain "the best" as young men but are both a bit too "serious". Betsy continually questions her style of parenting when they were young...."Was I too rough on them?" she asks. I carry regrets about my role as their father as well but, unfortunately, we can't go back and "do it again"...or can we? The dogs, Averill and Fern, are Black Labs. Black Labs are, of course, the best, the most lovable...is there any other kind of dog? In a way, Betsy has started a bad thing with 'em because, again like a farmer, there's never a morning off. They're both up at the crack of dawn clamoring for their walk. She gets up; they follow her, sulking when she closes them out of the bathroom. She goes to the coffee pot, they're there. She sits to get the first sip...four beautiful brown eyes shout "C'mon Betsy, let's go!" And when she finally dons her rain slicker, heavy jacket, or whatever attire is appropriate for that Vermont day and puts on her shoes, they're like race horses at a gate.
Tom Morse, eighth generation Vermont Sugarmaker, keeping them at the gate!The three of them head out for the woods. Each dog has something...a carrot, a tennis ball, a bone...Fern, the younger one, thinks they're all balls but Averill knows the difference. Their first stop these days is the vernal pool up at the top of the hill. Splash...they're both in faster'n a bolt of lightning. They wildly paddle for a stick..."Can you believe that? That's awesome...a STICK!" they say. One time Betsy called me out there just to watch them handle a long stick; both dogs clamped on each end, paddling in tandem toward the shore! The other day she came back bragging about her dogs. "We ran into a huge herd of deer" she said. "There were white flags everywhere and those dogs were off!" She said they came back immediately though when she called, tails between their legs...they know right from wrong for Mom.
A while back, I was the morning person with the dogs. Betsy had worked all night and was still out when "nature called" Averill and Fern. We followed the usual routine, up the woods ski trail, a stop at the vernal pool for stick time, and then we went out into the open pasture. Although the dogs were totally "into" their walk, they acted a bit like school kids do with a substitute; all of a sudden they disappeared over a hill. I worried because the one time they got in trouble with the neighbors was on a "solo" jaunt. I started hollering "Averill, Fern...c'mon...Averill, Fern...c'mere!" I hollered and hollered but, five minutes, ten minutes...those two brats were gone. My final utterance came routinely and out of shear frustration..."Sons-a-bitches!" I shouted. The humor of it struck at the same time two black heads appeared on the horizon. I started laughing like I was a ten-year-old again and they joined in...yes they did...and we three headed home laughing our heads off .
Dogs
talk. They talk with their eyes and their tails and their running
leaps. Their message time and time again is clear: "Isn't today
wonderful...isn't all this just perfect?". I wish we all could be like
that.
People need to "take a page" from the dog world.
It shouldn't be so difficult for folks to be happy. The way I do it is
through faith (yes, I'm talking God here), eating well, and living well.
I stay away from alcohol, things smoked, and pills (hope a short sermon
is OK). Dogs know enough to munch on a few blades of grass for their
"maintenance" ...gosh, they're smart! Nature is always best, like grass
for the dogs and, say...pure maple products for people (you knew I'd get
around to this, didn't you?). If by any chance you want to include pure

THE DAMSELFLY PHOTO AT THE TOP OF THE BLOG - NEAT STORY ON THIS ONE
This was taken on the Memorial Day weekend at Econfina Creek. Because Econfina is higher in elevation than it is near me, it is a fast running, springfed creek - it comes out of the springs crystal clear and colorless, turning that gorgeous aqua/turquoise color and as it enters the creek, it picks up tannin and starts darkening.
Down here, you can't see the bottom - it flows slow and deep, the color of coffee.
This is an American Rubyspot, and when it perches and flicks its wings which is its habit, that red spot is exposed and really is "ruby". It is one of our larger damsels. I imagine flashing that spot may entice the opposite sex. I am not absolutely sure of its sex but I think it may be a female.
Took the grandkids to this creek in the same spot two years ago. I got a picture of the same species but it wasn't close or clear enough. I use the LCD to focus, and I put the Sony T1 in a Pelican case so it won't drown (my score on this is 3 cameras) but let's not talk anymore about that!
The same twig was there. That's why I went looking for it last weekend. I just had a feeling. Certainly it wasn't the same - damsels have a short lifespan. But that I photographed both on the very same twig that comes up from a submerged log, blows my mind.
According to Dennis Paulson's book, "Dragonflies and Damselflies of the Southeast", it is just at or slightly south of its range.
It is a very agreeable male American Rubyspot and to a nature photographer who just LOVES bugs, a great find.
I would very much rather be straddling that log, losing myself in nature, than spending hours here at the keyboard, worrying about the future of a crumbling America and its first dictator.

The Rules Of Photography: Knowing When To Break Them

Creative photography is a mix of many ingredients; art and technology, skill and patience, cold mechanical know-how and individual flair.
For a beginner learning the basics, it would be nice if there was a simple set of rules to follow to make the whole thing easier. Surely someone could just tell you what aperture to use in a given situation, or how to structure a composition to get the best results every time?
Photography is a lot like learning to drive. With a car, you need to know the road rules, and you need to know the basic skills of steering, accelerating and braking. These can be learned easily with a bit of practice. But even when you have mastered the essentials, you still need to get to know your car, because each car is a little different. Then you need experience with night driving, wet-weather driving, off-road driving...
What you must understand is that following the rules will only take you so far. In photography, you will find that rules help you in the beginning, and some rules will stay with you throughout your career. The trick is to understand when the rules don't apply, or when you should choose to ignore them. This is the type of knowledge that can't easily be taught. It comes with experience, and is what gives you individuality as a photographer.
Below are just a few of the rules that, for an experienced photographer, are just made to be broken.
Photography Rule #1. Outdoor Photos Should Be Taken In The Early Morning Or Late Afternoon. This is one of the first principles of landscape photography, and can be applied to almost any outdoor photography. The softness and warm colour of the sunlight at these times adds beauty and character to almost any scene. It also creates much lower contrast, allowing you to avoid harsh shadows and over-exposure of the highlights in your photos.
When can you break this rule? I can think of two situations immediately.
Black and white photography is defined by contrast rather than by subtle colour, so you often want stronger shadows to create the best image. For this reason, black and white photos are often best taken closer to the middle of the day when the light is stronger.
Rainforest photography is also best in the middle of the day, but this time you don't want bright sunlight; you want cloudy weather to create an nice even light throughout the forest. Otherwise the patches of light coming through the canopy will create 'hot spots' all over your image.
Photography Rule #2. The Rule Of Thirds. The rule of thirds is an excellent guide for a beginner learning about composition. In simple terms, it divides your photo into three parts, vertically and horizontally. The dividing lines are the best places to position long objects in a photo (like trees and horizon lines). The points where the lines intersect are the most effective places to position smaller objects for most impact.
Photos that are taken according to the Rule Of Thirds appear balanced. They satisfy our natural sense of visual order and simply look 'right.' Unfortunately, the world is not so easily organised as the rule, so it is impossible in nature to take every photo this way. Moreover, sometimes you may decide to ignore the rule, giving more impact to the photo by shaking up the normal balance of the composition.
When can you break this rule? Here is one obvious example, but I am sure you can think of many more.
Sunset photos feature colourful skies, and silhouettes in the foreground. If you have a truly spectacular sky, it doesn't make sense to fill a third of the picture with empty blackness. You may choose to tilt the camera up to make a feature of the sky, and reduce the area filled by the foreground.
Rule #3. Your Lightmeter Is Always Right. Most of the time you can trust your lightmeter. If it indicates your photo is well exposed, it probably will be...but not always.
When can you break this rule? When there is a big difference in the level of light between the subject and the surroundings.
You may be photographing a person, an animal, a flower etc. in full sunlight, but the background is shady. This is a very effective way of making your subject stand out from the surroundings. In this situation, the different levels of light are bound to trick the lightmeter. In fact, if you take your photo on auto, your subject will most likely be overexposed. The best approach is to switch your camera to manual, and adjust your aperture or shutter speed until the photo is underexposed by one or two stops. This will darken your background and bring the subject into perfect exposure.
Can you see a pattern developing here? Rules are there for a reason, and your skills will improve in leaps and bounds if you learn them and practice them. But having done that, you are ready to take the next step. Start experimenting outside the rules and see where it takes you. Knowing and following the rules will make you a good photographer. Choosing how and when to break them will make you even better.

OBAMA CAMPAIGN URGING SUPPORTERS TO REPORT ON "NON-BELIEVERS"

Today - on this special day - when we honor in memory all our brave soldiers through the centuries, back to the Revolutionary War - we are living under this disgusting piece of human detritus who has his eyes on a communistic dictatorship? Is this what we have come to - that we have no real "working" Congress; that our military brass is blind? That are soldiers we send are cannon fodder and nothing more because the wars are endless, a matter of commerce (the military/industrial complex), and a handful of global parasites - royals, billionaires, and government "leaders".
The struggle to preserve the Republic guaranteed by people who revered the Constitution, seems to be over.
Our elected officials are unresponsive. All over our country they grinned, slapped backs, kissed women and babies, hugged the old people, behaved like "one of us" and they aren't. The current crop is just as slimy as the last. They are eaten up by ambition in jobs they think will never end.
End them.
Not one is good enough for a second term.
The monstrous inhabitant of the White House must go. The UN must leave our shores for the good of our country. And all the executive orders by which we are imprisoned for almost four years, removed. The spying on our citizens must end. We need to repeal the Patriot Act and all its draconian assaults on our freedoms.
Our country was born in a haze of black powder and blood.
The Declaration of Independence was a wonderfully radical document as was the Constitution. Read the Declaration today. Remember. There was once a time when Americans were really free. Are you afraid to be free? That's not a frivolous question. What are you afraid of?
It was fought because of a king's far reaching claim on the lives and liberties of us an ocean away.
We have a dictator/messiah who wants us in chains. He puts chains on us every single day.
He has taken our liberties and our freedom and made us subject to police actions and surveillance. The rule of law does not apply to him or anyone in his administration.
How dare we sit back and go to a movie today and not know what the meaning of lost lives and phony wars are.
While we sit at our X-Boxes or watch a few DVDs in the cool comfort of our homes, the DHS is arming for war with us. It is sending armed drones to our windows to spy on us.

Today - on this special day - when we honor in memory all our brave soldiers through the centuries, back to the Revolutionary War - we are living under this disgusting piece of human detritus who has his eyes on a communistic dictatorship? Is this what we have come to - that we have no real "working" Congress; that our military brass is blind? That are soldiers we send are cannon fodder and nothing more because the wars are endless, a matter of commerce (the military/industrial complex), and a handful of global parasites - royals, billionaires, and government "leaders".
The struggle to preserve the Republic guaranteed by people who revered the Constitution, seems to be over.
Our elected officials are unresponsive. All over our country they grinned, slapped backs, kissed women and babies, hugged the old people, behaved like "one of us" and they aren't. The current crop is just as slimy as the last. They are eaten up by ambition in jobs they think will never end.
End them.
Not one is good enough for a second term.
The monstrous inhabitant of the White House must go. The UN must leave our shores for the good of our country. And all the executive orders by which we are imprisoned for almost four years, removed. The spying on our citizens must end. We need to repeal the Patriot Act and all its draconian assaults on our freedoms.
Our country was born in a haze of black powder and blood.
The Declaration of Independence was a wonderfully radical document as was the Constitution. Read the Declaration today. Remember. There was once a time when Americans were really free. Are you afraid to be free? That's not a frivolous question. What are you afraid of?
It was fought because of a king's far reaching claim on the lives and liberties of us an ocean away.
We have a dictator/messiah who wants us in chains. He puts chains on us every single day.
He has taken our liberties and our freedom and made us subject to police actions and surveillance. The rule of law does not apply to him or anyone in his administration.
How dare we sit back and go to a movie today and not know what the meaning of lost lives and phony wars are.
While we sit at our X-Boxes or watch a few DVDs in the cool comfort of our homes, the DHS is arming for war with us. It is sending armed drones to our windows to spy on us.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. What if the federal government could write any law, regulate any behavior and tax any event, no matter what the Constitution authorized? What if the majority in Congress rejects the idea of limited government and views the Constitution as granting it blanket power to do whatever it can get away with? What if the constitutional prohibition on the government’s taking of life, liberty or property without due process of law is only for show and is not for real?
What if the House of Representatives seriously considered letting the military lock up whatever Americans the president ordered the troops to arrest, without charges filed or lawyers present or a judge presiding? What if the House seriously debated this idea of indefinite military detention of Americans in America and actually voted in favor of it? What if this unconstitutional monstrosity becomes the law and your right to due process depends on whether you remain with the majority, stay silent or behave properly? What if the Constitution’s guarantees are not guarantees at all, but are subject to the whims of whoever is in power?
What if the Declaration of Independence, which articulated the moral authority for the revolution against Great Britain, recognized that our rights come from our Creator and are unalienable? What if very few in government recognize the divine origin of human freedom and its natural integrity to our humanity?
What if the government only permitted freedom so long as it was exercised as the government pleases? What if the government rejected the basic values of every person’s right to life and liberty and property in favor of some collective good, where the government could arrest you without evidence, ration your freedom to suit the general welfare and take your property from you and sell it at a profit?
What if the government could hire thugs to keep you safe? What if it gave the thugs uniforms and badges and sent them to airports? What if it gave them rubber gloves to wear and told them they could touch you and your children and your parents however and wherever they wished? What if these thugs touched the private parts of little babies and old ladies and intentionally restrained those who have criticized them while the rest of us just watched and let this happen?
What if the airlines did a better job of keeping their customers happy and their property safe than the thugs did? What if the government spent millions of your tax dollars to advertise what a great job it’s doing? What if the government charged the airlines millions of their dollars for the illusory services these thugs are rendering? What if the government’s thugs never caught a single bad guy intent on harming a flight in America? What if the government’s thugs actually let weapons and bad guys onto planes because the thugs are dopes who have no competition, who can’t be sued and who won’t be fired?
What if the government found more dopes and dupes and convinced them that they should conspire to commit acts of terrorism? What if the idea for terrorist acts and the means for committing them came from the government? What if no real threats were involved in these games and no real weapons were used, just fake threats and fake weapons, fomented and provided by the government? What if the government created these phony crimes just so that it could solve them? What if no one was ever in danger from these government-created crimes, except those the government tricked? What if the government did this again and again and then boasted that it was keeping us safe from its own creations? What if Congress and the media and even the courts fell for this?
What if, on Memorial Day, we remember times that were freer than today? What if, on Memorial Day, when we think of those who died for our freedom, we end up recognizing that the freedom they died for is dying? What if it becomes fashionable for the government to ignore the Constitution? What if the Constitution dies because the government stops following it? What if, next Memorial Day, freedom is just a memory?

titled
None Dare Call It Conspiracy, and was authored by Gary
Allen with Larry Abraham. It was considered very controversial
23 years ago. In retrospect it appears to have been a blueprint
for the future of America. That America is perhaps where we are
all living today.
If you doubt
the possibility of a conspiracy to bring America to it's knees
and perhaps install a totalitarian dictatorship through the
conversion of our republic into a democracy you need only look
to the changes in our laws. Gary Allen provided his readers with
fourteen signposts on the road to totalitarianism. They were
compiled by Dr. Warren Carroll, and Mike Djordjevich, a refugee
from Yugoslavian communism. The list is in no particular order.
However, nothing on the list existed in American law at the time
the list was compiled.
Read it now,
experience it for yourself. Any one of the listed items would be
a clear warning that the totalitarian state is very near, and a
significant number of perhaps five or more could possibly
suggest that the freedom we have once enjoyed and the
preservation of our Great Republic has been lost.

Restrictions on taking money out of the country and on the
establishment or retention of a foreign bank account by an
American citizen.
2. Abolition
of private ownership of hand guns.
3. Detention
of individuals without judicial process.

Requirements that private financial transactions be keyed to
social security numbers or other government identification so
that government records of these transactions can be fed into a
computer.
5. Use of
compulsory education laws to forbid attendance at presently
existing private schools.
6.
Compulsory non-military service.
7.
Compulsory psychological treatment for non-government workers or
public school children.
8. An
official declaration that anti-communist (Patriot) organizations
are subversive and subsequent legal action taken to suppress
them.
9. Laws
limiting the number of people allowed to meet in a private home.

significant change in passport regulations to make passports
more difficult to obtain.

price controls, especially in a non-wartime situation.
12. Any kind
of compulsory registration with the government of where
individuals work.
13. Any
attempt to restrict freedom of movement within the United
States.
14. Any
attempt to make a new major law by executive decree (that is,
actually put into effect, not merely authorized as by existing
executive orders.)
President
Nixon invoked numbers 1, 11 and 14. As of January 1,1972, banks
must report to the government any deposit or withdrawal over
$5,000. That number has since been reduced to $3,000. Any
purchase over $10,000 made in cash must also be reported to the
federal government. Clinton has done the same via Executive
Orders.
Courts have
in some instances ordered individuals without bank accounts to
open one under threat of incarceration through charges of Civil
contempt.....
CAN WE TALK ABOUT BEING A CANDIDATE FOR PUBLIC OFFICE FOR A SECOND?
For a couple of days now, I've been involved in an internal struggle. It's been pretty intense. Last night I fielded a question to some of my friends and acquaintances about asking for donations so that I could run against Steve Southerland, a nice guy (our US Representative and a Republican), but so moderate a conservative he might as well be reading a good book in a hammock in his office. As a former supporter, I am not impressed with his record, nor am I satisfied with his less-than-dynamic attitude or his poor decisions in voting. Someone wrote that he was a moderate conservative. I'm sorry. That is not good enough for this moment in history.
After all, he held a town meeting not long ago in Destin, FL and no one came.
With the efforts of a newly founded organization, Bay Patriots and Derrell Day, the founder, and a radio talk show host, Burnie Thompson who persuaded us that Steve was "our guy", Bay County cleaned out the barn and sent newcomer Southerland to DC in place of the 30-year incumbent, Allen Boyd, a Democrat "blue dog".
Obama is driving our country in high gear racing to the precipice of doom, and a do-nothing Congress, which includes Southerland, is walking in thick, deep quicksand slogging along behind at less than a snail's pace. I am pretty sure if you are reading this blog and using the links, you can see that Congress is bogged down and no one is man or woman enough to stand up and make some demands of their cohorts to rid ourselves of the malignant Obama regime, and start reversing everything he has done to destroy our Constitution, our way of life, sealing our futures as slaves of the police state called America.
I was going to get on the radio (Derrell's show) and courageously ask for 5,000 people to donate $2.00 each (I'd already been offered $500) so that by June 8 I could register as a Republican candidate, though you know I'm a Constitutional libertarian, to run against Southerland.
Can you believe the fee is $10,440? Prohibitive on purpose, is my guess.
My plan was to ask for checks and a 45 cent stamp, so that if I missed the required fee and the deadline, the checks would be returned immediately.
Then I heard what cap and trade will be doing in a year to you and I. Not only did Obama make good on his promise of skyrocketing energy bills, but think about this...how does electricity affect your life? If you can't afford a $400 bill or more, which very well might happen, that smart meter will disconnect you immediately. There will have to be some kind of government plan you'll need to survive - taxpayer money = more taxation = subsidy. This is redistribution of wealth.
What about merchants - from food stores to your barber, to the pet shop, the auto repair guy, the tire shop - how can they afford refrigeration, air conditioning, lights, computers, radios, appliances, healthcare - all the things we had in the safety zone even one day pre-Obama. You have all been fed a lie - and the UN's Agenda 21 will put us back so far we will be living like babushka grandmothers in Soviet Russia in the cold war '50s. You will not recognize our formerly free country.
And I realized, send me to Washington - where I would speak up loudly and consistently against this regime and what has happened to our country since the dictator walked into the White House, wouldn't matter one fig. Congress is infected - whether or not they are Democrats.
I don't think my presence in Congress, loudly calling as soon as the opportunity arose, for the impeachment of those thugs in the White House and the cabinet, would be well received. I would be ignored. I would be ridiculed and belittled. I would love to be the squeaky wheel. I would love to accomplish great things for my country so that in the end of my term, people could sleep easy in their beds at night. There wouldn't be Obamacare. There wouldn't be socialist/Marxist teachers instructing your kids and trying to brainwash them into being good little simpletons for the state. Your freedoms would be guaranteed by these swine instead of compromised.
AND THERE WOULDN'T BE OBAMA, THE TYRANT DICTATOR IN THE WHITE HOUSE WHO WILL END YOUR LIFE IN POVERTY AS HE CRIPPLES AND CRASHES OUR ECONOMY. WAIT UNTIL YOU GET HIT WITH CAP AND TRADE. Start getting smart about it.
Remember our Constitution, how it was given to us, and what it gave us - the near perfect land called America. It's all we have, and it's barely surviving. Is your elected official placing him- or herself between it and the Obama regime? With the efforts of a newly founded organization, Bay Patriots and Derrell Day, the founder, and a radio talk show host, Burnie Thompson who persuaded us that Steve was "our guy", Bay County cleaned out the barn and sent newcomer Southerland to DC in place of the 30-year incumbent, Allen Boyd, a Democrat "blue dog".
Obama is driving our country in high gear racing to the precipice of doom, and a do-nothing Congress, which includes Southerland, is walking in thick, deep quicksand slogging along behind at less than a snail's pace. I am pretty sure if you are reading this blog and using the links, you can see that Congress is bogged down and no one is man or woman enough to stand up and make some demands of their cohorts to rid ourselves of the malignant Obama regime, and start reversing everything he has done to destroy our Constitution, our way of life, sealing our futures as slaves of the police state called America.
I was going to get on the radio (Derrell's show) and courageously ask for 5,000 people to donate $2.00 each (I'd already been offered $500) so that by June 8 I could register as a Republican candidate, though you know I'm a Constitutional libertarian, to run against Southerland.
Can you believe the fee is $10,440? Prohibitive on purpose, is my guess.
My plan was to ask for checks and a 45 cent stamp, so that if I missed the required fee and the deadline, the checks would be returned immediately.
Then I heard what cap and trade will be doing in a year to you and I. Not only did Obama make good on his promise of skyrocketing energy bills, but think about this...how does electricity affect your life? If you can't afford a $400 bill or more, which very well might happen, that smart meter will disconnect you immediately. There will have to be some kind of government plan you'll need to survive - taxpayer money = more taxation = subsidy. This is redistribution of wealth.
What about merchants - from food stores to your barber, to the pet shop, the auto repair guy, the tire shop - how can they afford refrigeration, air conditioning, lights, computers, radios, appliances, healthcare - all the things we had in the safety zone even one day pre-Obama. You have all been fed a lie - and the UN's Agenda 21 will put us back so far we will be living like babushka grandmothers in Soviet Russia in the cold war '50s. You will not recognize our formerly free country.
And I realized, send me to Washington - where I would speak up loudly and consistently against this regime and what has happened to our country since the dictator walked into the White House, wouldn't matter one fig. Congress is infected - whether or not they are Democrats.
I don't think my presence in Congress, loudly calling as soon as the opportunity arose, for the impeachment of those thugs in the White House and the cabinet, would be well received.
