My advice to New Yorkers, even the most liberal (who should be watching "No Guns for Jews", and "No Guns for Negroes" at the JFPO site, is to purchase a personal weapon, find a place which will teach you how to protect yourself from attack and tell the state anti-gun legislators to go toHELL.
