If you've never tried panning, sluicing, shaking, rockhounding, metal detecting for gold (where it's found, of course) you don't know what you're missing.
It gets you outside; the only limits are your own physical attributes, and it gets you into beautiful places.
If you don't get any, the worst you can do is get beautiful photos, a day in the sun, and if you're looking for placer gold, take a trout rod with you - you're bound to catch dinner.
I lived and learned how to pan and fish for trout in Coloma, California. What a beautiful place.
